A court has sentenced three defendants to death in a case over the killing of university student Md Wazed Simanta, who was stabbed by muggers in Narayanganj.
District and Sessions Judge Md Abu Shamim Azad delivered the verdict Monday, August 17, in the presence of the defendants.
The three defendants sentenced to death are Anik, Akash, and Chandi Babu, all of whom were present in court when the verdict was announced. All three convicted defendants have multiple prior cases against them, including mugging, murder, and narcotics offenses.
Court Police Inspector Abdus Samad confirmed the death sentences.
According to case details and verdict documents, Wazed Simanta was a student in the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department at American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB). On the morning of December 12, 2024, around 6 a.m., he left home for university. On the way, he encountered muggers in front of the shrine of Minnat Ali Shah Saheb in Deobhog, Narayanganj. The muggers stabbed him and stole his mobile phone and 1,800 taka. Critically injured, he was first taken to Narayanganj General Hospital, then transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. He died there while under treatment around 11 p.m. on December 14.
The deceased, Simanta, was the son of Md Alam Parvez of the Deobhog area.
Court sources said testimony was collected from 24 of the 27 total witnesses in this high-profile murder case. After reviewing the evidence and testimony, the court sentenced the three defendants to death.
