A masked gang has robbed the homes of two brothers in Zakiganj, Sylhet.
It happened at about 3am on Saturday in Uttarkul village in Barothakuri union, number 7, of the upazila.
The robbers first entered the home of Master Jamal Ahmad, tied up members of the family and looted cash, gold ornaments, mobile phones and CCTV equipment. They then raided the home of his younger brother, Shamim Ahmad, a businessman and director of Zakiganj Rajmahal. They beat both brothers when they tried to resist. Shamim Ahmad, who was seriously injured, is being treated at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Citing the family, police and Barothakuri union parishad chairman Mohsin Murtuza Chowdhury Tipu said a masked gang of seven to 10 first cut the lock on the collapsible gate of Jamal Ahmad’s house and went in. They then tied up the family and searched the whole house.
The robbers took an estimated four to five bhori of gold ornaments, cash, four mobile phones and equipment including the CCTV monitor from that house. The amount of cash taken could not be learned immediately.
The gang then entered Shamim Ahmad’s house next door. When he tried to resist he was beaten and left bleeding. His elder brother, Jamal Ahmad, was also beaten. Shamim Ahmad was rescued and admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where his condition is said to be critical. What was taken from his house could not be learned immediately.
A police patrol reached the scene that night on hearing the news. Later Samuel Sangma, additional superintendent of police for Zakiganj circle, and Muhammad Abdur Razzak, officer-in-charge of Zakiganj police station, visited the scene and took away the house’s CCTV recording device.
Confirming the robbery, Samuel Sangma said: “On hearing the news the OC and I went to the spot and brought back the CCTV device from the house. We cannot view the footage because we do not know the password. The owner, Shamim Ahmad, has it, and he is now under treatment in a critical condition. Police are fully active on this case.”
The robbery of two brothers’ homes in one night has spread fear in Uttarkul village and nearby areas. Residents have demanded that the robbers be quickly identified and arrested, the looted goods recovered and security in the area stepped up.
