BGB seizes smuggled goods worth Tk 22 lakh on Sylhet border

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized smuggled Indian goods worth about Tk 22.19 lakh in separate drives along the Sylhet border. One person involved in smuggling was detained.

The drives were carried out from Tuesday night until dawn on Wednesday in border areas under the responsibility of the Sylhet Battalion, 48 BGB.

BGB sources said members of the Banglabazar, Pratappur, Panthumai, Utma, Tamabil, Sangram and Kalairag border outposts conducted separate operations on tip-offs. They seized various smuggled goods including Indian cosmetics, fuchka, cattle, blankets, tea leaves, basmati rice and drugs. One person involved in smuggling was detained at the time. The seized goods have an estimated market value of Tk 22.19 lakh.

Lt Col Md Nazmul Haque, commanding officer of the Sylhet Battalion, 48 BGB, said BGB’s operations and intelligence work were continuing in order to protect the border and prevent smuggling and drug trafficking.

He said the goods were seized and one person detained in operations at various points on the border, and that further action over the seized goods and the detained person was under way in line with the law and existing rules.
