NARAIL — Eleven political parties held a joint rally and procession in Narail on Saturday demanding the immediate implementation of the July Charter, constitutional reforms and a referendum, organizers said.

The rally took place at the Muktamancha open-air stage in the old bus terminal area on the afternoon of May 2.

Ataur Rahman Bachchu, the lawmaker for Narail-2 and chief of the district unit of Jamaat-e-Islami, was the chief guest.

“The government is betraying the nation by failing to implement the July Charter, constitutional reforms and the referendum verdict,” Bachchu said. “After the election, the government threw the referendum into the Bay of Bengal.”

He said the BNP chairman, who is the current prime minister, had spoken in favor of a “yes” vote in the referendum during campaign rallies but was now stalling on its implementation.

“We do not want to see another authoritarian government,” Bachchu said. “The people do not want any more discrimination. The people are frustrated today.”

Maulana Obaidullah Kayser, secretary of the district unit of Jamaat-e-Islami, moderated the rally. Others present included Ayub Hossain Khan, assistant secretary of the district unit; district working committee members Maulana Alamgir Hossain, Jamirul Haq Tutul, Hemayetul Haq Himu, Dr. Khan Abdus Sobhan and Akidul Islam; Hafez Abdullah Al Amin, the Sadar upazila chief; Zakir Hossain, the municipal chief; Maulana Hadiuzzaman, the Lohagara upazila chief; Maulana Tariqul Islam, the Kalia upazila chief; and Mohammad Salauddin, president of the district Chhatra Shibir.

After the rally, the procession started from the old bus terminal area and circled the main roads of the town, including Rupganj.
