The Strait of Hormuz will be reopened only once the United States fully accepts Iran’s conditions, the country’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has said. Its spokesman, Sardar Mohebi, said reopening the strait was in no way linked to the ongoing talks with Oman. The claims could not be independently verified.

The remarks were reported by Iran’s state news agency Tasnim.

The IRGC spokesman said Iran has “a specific process and conditions” for reopening the strait. Only when these are met, he said, will the vital sea lane reopen.

“For us, the Strait of Hormuz is not merely an economic waterway; it is also an element of geographic and strategic power,” Mohebi said.

He added that the United States “must fully accept” Iran’s conditions and stop interfering in regional negotiations.

In Mohebi’s words, whenever the United States accepts Iran’s conditions, the Strait of Hormuz will certainly be reopened.

With these remarks, Iran has made clear that it does not equate the decision to reopen the strait with the Oman-mediated talks or any possible settlement. Rather, the final decision rests on the fulfilment of Iran’s own conditions.
