Delhi police have begun taking firm action over allegations that obscene and objectionable language was used on social media against India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, during the NEET movement led by the CJP.
Law enforcement has already sent legal notices to several social media platforms on the matter. Following the police action, most of the objectionable videos, posts and comments identified have already been removed from social media.
A special police team is keeping digital content under regular surveillance and directing platforms to act quickly whenever any fresh contentious material comes to notice.
News of the Delhi police cyber operation emerged just a day after the CJP wound up its movement following the resignation of the union education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan. The movement, which began at the start of May over the leak of the NEET examination paper and demands for thorough reform of the education system, was formally withdrawn on Saturday, 25 July, after running for about 37 days.
Alongside the education minister’s resignation, the union government has accepted two further principal demands of the protesters. They include financial compensation for the families of NEET candidates who took their own lives, and the withdrawal of all FIRs or cases filed against protesting students and organisers.
At a press conference at the Constitution Club in Delhi, the CJP’s chief spokesperson, Saurav Das, said they had withdrawn the movement in a spirit of good sense after receiving assurances that the terms agreed with the government would be implemented within a set timeframe. The party, founded by a former AAP worker, Abhijit Dipak, had begun an indefinite sit-in at Jantar Mantar in Delhi from 20 June.
The movement gained further momentum when the environmental campaigner Sonam Wangchuk joined it. The highly charged situation created after a police baton charge during the protesters’ “march to parliament” on 20 July was eventually calmed through talks, and the movement came to an end.
