The Republican congressman Thomas Massie has alleged that the United States has been significantly weakened both militarily and economically by getting into the conflict with Iran. He contends that the Trump administration’s decisions have had a negative effect on the country’s defence capability, its economy and its internal stability.
In a post on the social media platform X, Massie wrote: “The United States has been significantly weakened by the war with Iran.”
He alleged that the conflict has reduced US missile defence capability, depleted fuel reserves, cost the lives of service members, raised the prices of consumer goods and further increased the national debt.
In Massie’s words: “This administration has depleted our missile defence systems, run down our oil reserves, sent our men and women in uniform to their deaths, raised the prices of consumer goods, increased the debt and ignored the country’s needs at home — all for Israel. It is all their fault.”
The Republican lawmaker’s comments are seen as open criticism of the Trump administration’s Iran policy. He has previously raised objections on several occasions to US military intervention abroad and to US spending on international conflicts.
There has been no immediate response from the Trump administration to Massie’s allegations.
