Leaders of the Chougacha Press Club in Jashore have strongly condemned and protested against a campaign spreading false and fabricated information on social media about journalist MA Rahim.
At a protest meeting at the Chougacha Press Club office on Wednesday (5 August) afternoon, leaders said there was no negative complaint against MA Rahim in his long journalistic career, and that a deliberate smear was being run against him over a minor incident — which was regrettable and condemnable.
The meeting was chaired by press club president Principal Abu Jafar. Those present included senior vice-president Rahidul Islam Khan, general secretary Azizur Rahman, joint general secretaries MA Rahim and Babul Akhtar, senior journalists Asadul Islam and Abdus Shukur, treasurer Asaduzzaman Mukto, sports secretary MA Mannan, publications secretary Dewan Shafiqul Islam, organising secretary Shyamal Datta, office secretary Raihan Hossain, assistant office secretary Lavlur Rahman, and journalists Azizur Rahman, Azam Ashraf, Jahangir Alam and Zahid Hasan, among other members.
The dispute arose on Monday when MA Rahim had an argument at the Bhagyakul sweet shop. At one point, in the presence of Chougacha Press Club general secretary Azizur Rahman, the shop’s owner behaved arrogantly towards the journalist. The matter was later settled through arbitration in the presence of local dignitaries.
The shop owner also gave a written undertaking to behave decently with customers in future, and MA Rahim gave a written statement that he had no further complaint over the matter.
