NAOGAON — Cold has intensified in Naogaon as dense fog and chilly winds grip the northern district, with the sun not visible for two days in the Badalgachhi area, residents and weather officials said.

The Badalgachhi Agricultural Weather Observation Center recorded a minimum temperature of 12.9 degrees Celsius at 9 a.m. on Sunday (Dec. 21). The previous day, Saturday (Dec. 20), the temperature was recorded at 13.8 degrees Celsius.

Cold has tightened its grip on the northern district as the early days of the Bengali month of Poush brought increased chilly winds and dense fog. The sun has not appeared since the previous day due to light fog and clouds, causing hardship for laborers and low- to middle-income people.

Local residents said cold winds have been blowing in Naogaon’s Badalgachhi for the past several days, day and night, making the cold feel sharper.

Joynal Abedin, a van driver from Barunkandi area of Naogaon, and Tapan, an auto-rickshaw driver from Raninagar upazila, said: “The cold has been very intense for two days. It is very hard to drive a van. Our hands shake, and it is difficult to drive the rickshaw. People are not going outside much. We have to come out despite the cold because of our livelihood.”

Ordinary working people said they had to go out for their daily work despite the severe cold. Without warm, thick clothes, they had to ignore the cold and go to work, they said. Since this morning, drops of water like rain have been falling along with the dense fog. They said they would have to go to work despite the bitter cold because of their need to feed themselves.

Hamidul Haque, senior observer at the Badalgachhi Weather and Agricultural Observatory, said: “The minimum temperature in the district was recorded at 12.9 degrees Celsius by 9 a.m. today. The cold is somewhat more today because the sun has not been visible since yesterday. The temperature may remain like this for the next few days.”

Mizanur Rahman, an official of the Badalgachhi Weather and Agricultural Observatory, said the sun’s heat was waning in the district due to cloud cover. “This morning, dense fog has been added to it. As a result, the fog is falling like rain, and various cold-related illnesses are setting in. We advise people not to leave their homes in the morning unless absolutely necessary,” he said.
