NAOGAON — A woman in Naogaon’s Manda upazila abandoned her newborn daughter hours after giving birth, leaving the father in distress, officials said. The incident occurred Thursday, Dec. 18, at the Tetulia Union Health and Family Welfare Center and has caused widespread concern in the area.
The father, Touhid Islam, is a resident of Chakhari Ballabh village in Naogaon’s Mahadebpur upazila. He married the woman, a resident of Sahapur (Fojidarpara) village in Manda upazila, about two years ago after a romantic relationship.
Touhid Islam said his wife had been staying at her father’s house for the past three months. He went to her parents’ home Thursday after learning she was in labor. He then took his wife and mother-in-law to the Tetulia Union Health and Family Welfare Center, where she gave birth to a baby girl through a normal delivery around 5 p.m.
“After the birth, I went to the market to bring medicine on the doctor’s advice. When I returned, I found that my wife and mother-in-law had left the newborn behind and gone away. The matter is extremely inhumane. I am shocked and lost by the behavior of my wife and mother-in-law. So I had no choice but to file a complaint at Manda police station,” Touhid Islam said.
Contacted about the matter, Touhid Islam’s wife said: “There has been discord between me and my husband and his family since our marriage. I did not want a child, but it happened. Since I will no longer live with Touhid, I am not willing to raise the child either.”
Sub-inspector Shamsur Rahman of Manda police station said they had received Touhid Islam’s written complaint. His wife had stated she would not live with her husband and was not interested in raising the child. The matter will be investigated and necessary steps taken, he said.
