SIRAJGANJ — A wedding in Sirajganj’s Shahjadpur upazila collapsed Friday after a fight broke out over the customary hiding of the groom’s shoes, with the groom’s party leaving without the bride.

The incident occurred Friday afternoon, Dec. 19, at the bride’s home in Char village of Guliakhali, under Kaijuri union of the upazila. The dispute went public Sunday after attempts at a settlement failed.

According to inquiries made Sunday afternoon, Dec. 21, the groom — a son of Abdul Khalek of Guliakhali village — arrived at the bride’s home in Char Guliakhali on Friday with about 60 to 70 members of the groom’s party. The bride’s family had arranged hospitality for about 200 guests.

But after the bride’s side hid the groom’s shoes as part of the traditional ritual, members of the groom’s party became enraged, attacked the bride’s house, vandalized property and looted belongings before leaving without completing the marriage.

The bride’s mother, Khadija Begum, said the family had welcomed the groom with a smartphone and a 10-ana gold chain. “We bought a cow worth one lakh taka and five maunds of curd to host 200 guests. Everyone finished eating. But over a trivial matter, the fight and looting broke off the wedding,” she said.

Shahjadpur police station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam said no one had filed a complaint as of Sunday. “Action will be taken once a complaint is received,” he said.
