NAOGAON — Sixty students at a madrasa in Naogaon’s Porsha upazila have been hospitalized with diarrhea, and 12 in serious condition have been transferred to other hospitals for advanced treatment, officials said.

The students at Al-Jamia-Al Arabia Darul Hidaya, known as the Porsha Bara Madrasa, were admitted to the upazila health complex. Officials said the number of cases could rise further.

Doctors suspect the students may have been infected through contaminated food. The madrasa has been closed for 10 days.

According to the upazila health complex, three students suddenly fell ill on Tuesday morning. Another 28 students were admitted in the afternoon, 12 in the evening and 17 more on Wednesday. The sick students were admitted in stages.

Maulana Mufti Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman, a senior teacher at the madrasa, said about 1,600 students study there along with roughly 100 teachers and staff. “We all eat the madrasa food, but we cannot understand why these 60 students suddenly fell ill,” he said. He added that the madrasa was closed for 10 days on Wednesday afternoon.

Upazila Executive Officer Rakibul Islam visited the health complex after learning of the incident and inquired about the students’ treatment.
