Police have arrested Sarwar Jahan Sagar, 34, the main accused in the case filed over the rape and murder of Rabeya Khatun, 40, a domestic worker at a building under construction on road 107 in sector 12 of the Jolshiri housing project in Rupganj upazila, Narayanganj.
Acting on a tip-off, police arrested him in the Naora area early on Sunday.
Sarwar Jahan Sagar is the son of Abdur Rahim of Nachol village in Nachol, Chapainawabganj. Rabeya Khatun was from the Char Ramesh area of Bheduria union in Bhola Sadar. She had long lived with her family in a rented home in Naora village, Rupganj.
Police said Rabeya Khatun was attacked on her way home after work on Sunday 4 October. She was gagged and raped, and then strangled. The next day, Monday 5 October, police recovered her body from bushes on road 107 in sector 12 of the Jolshiri housing project.
AHM Salauddin, officer-in-charge of Rupganj police station, said Rabeya Khatun’s son, Shahin Mia, had filed a case at the station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and for murder. The arrested accused, Sagar, has been sent to court in Narayanganj. The accused has given a confessional statement in court that Rabeya Khatun was raped and then strangled, the officer said.
