A drive to protect mother hilsa on the Meghna river in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, has seized 50,000 metres of current net along with 11kg of hilsa.
The drive ran for three hours, from 9am to noon on Saturday, in the Nunertek area of the Meghna in Sonargaon.
It was led by Dr Ayesha Siddiqa, the Narayanganj district fisheries officer. Searches were carried out at various points on the river under her leadership. About 50,000 metres of illegal current net were seized and 11kg of hilsa recovered.
The seized nets were later burned in public, and the 11kg of hilsa were given free to a local orphanage and madrasa.
Dr Ayesha Siddiqa said no leniency would be shown to anyone who obstructs the breeding of hilsa, a national asset, in this special spawning season. Drives and monitoring of this kind on the Meghna to protect mother hilsa will continue round the clock, she said.
Mahmuda Akter, senior upazila fisheries officer of Sonargaon, and members of the river police were present during the drive.
