A fire has burned the roofs and furniture of seven rooms in a tin-shed house in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj. The house’s owner, Shahidullah, was burned while trying to rescue a calf from the cowshed. Two cows died in the fire.

The fire broke out before dawn on Tuesday, October 27, at Saattala Mor next to Amjad Market in the Mizmizi Dakshinpara area of Ward 2 of Narayanganj City Corporation.

Shahidullah was given first aid at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Local residents said a tenant, Monir Hossain, quarrelled with his wife on Monday, after which she left the house. They allege that out of anger, Monir put a gas cylinder on the bed in his room that night, set it alight, locked the room from outside with two padlocks and fled. The fire quickly spread to the neighbouring rooms.

Md Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy assistant director of the Narayanganj fire service, said two units from the Adamjee EPZ fire station rushed to the scene after being alerted at about 3:35am. The fire was brought under control at around 4am and fully put out at about 5:20am.

On the cause, he said it may have started from an electrical fault. A detailed investigation is under way, and the real cause will be known once it is complete.
