A section of the upazila BNP and people from all walks of life have held a human chain and a broom procession against Md Ramiz Uddin Londoni, convener of the BNP in Meghna upazila, Cumilla, in protest at the alleged assault of freedom fighter Md Ali Hossain, 75, president of the upazila Muktijoddha Dal.

The human chain and procession were held at 11am on Sunday in the upazila parishad compound under the banner of Meghna Upazila Nagorik Samaj.

Among those present were Abbas Uddin Commander, joint convener of Cumilla North district BNP; Wadud Munshi, former acting convener of the upazila BNP; its former member secretary, Azharul Haque Shahin; Shahabuddin, Fatema Akter Hena, Zakir Hossain and Selim Sarkar; and several hundred people of various classes and professions, among them leaders and workers of the upazila BNP and its affiliated bodies.

The speakers said: “On Thursday afternoon, in the office of the upazila nirbahi officer, in the presence of the UNO, the assistant commissioner (land) and the officer-in-charge, Meghna upazila BNP convener Ramiz Uddin Londoni assaulted Md Ali Hossain, president of the Meghna upazila Muktijoddha Dal. We strongly condemn and protest against this.”

They said it could not be accepted in any way that Ramiz Uddin, holding a responsible post in the party, should assault an elderly freedom fighter and president of the upazila Muktijoddha Dal. They demanded that organisational action be taken against him at once.

Ali Hossain said: “I am president of the Meghna upazila Muktijoddha Dal and member secretary of the Muktijoddha Complex. In that capacity I went to the office of the Meghna upazila nirbahi officer at about 2pm on Thursday about the complex’s electricity bill. I found the officer-in-charge, Shahidul Islam, and BNP convener Ramiz Uddin Londoni sitting in the office with several others. I handed the bill to the UNO and said, sir, the bill comes to six thousand taka, and there are only eight shops. At that point Ramiz Uddin Londoni said to me, why are you here? Go to Homna. You did not vote for Mosharraf sir. After he said this there was an argument, and at one stage Ramiz grabbed me by the throat and a man with him punched me from behind. The officer-in-charge, Shahidul Islam, then saved me from them and got me out of the office.”

Asked about this, Ramiz Uddin Londoni at first said: “Nothing happened between me and Ali Hossain. Ask the UNO and the officer-in-charge.”

When it was put to him that the officer-in-charge had said there was an argument, he said: “Freedom fighter Ali Hossain says our MP, Mosharraf Hossain sir, was out of the country during the Liberation War and is supposedly a fake freedom fighter. There was an argument about that. It is completely false that anyone laid a hand on him.”

Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Meghna police station, said: “There was an argument between the two. I then moved them apart.”

The upazila nirbahi officer, Mousumi Akter, said there had been an exchange of words between Ramiz Uddin Londoni and Ali Hossain, and the officer-in-charge had then moved the two apart. Asked what it was about, she said: “Something to do with the Daudkandi-Meghna seat. I was busy with work and could not follow the whole thing.”
