Police in Cumilla have detained 385 people in simultaneous operations across the district’s 18 police stations.

The raids targeted people suspected of inciting unrest among industrial workers, members of banned organizations, juvenile gangs, alleged drug dealers, suspected muggers and wanted defendants, district police said.

All district police units and the Detective Branch carried out the operations from Monday evening until midnight on the instructions of Superintendent of Police Md Anisuzzaman.

Detectives arrested Masud Rana, 26, on allegations that he incited disorder among industrial workers. A preliminary police investigation alleged that he used provocative social media posts to encourage workers to protest.

Police also conducted special operations in parts of Cumilla city and the district where juvenile gangs were believed to be active. Senior district police officers took part in field operations.

Additional Superintendent of Police Md Lutfar Rahman said the operations would continue as police sought to steer young people away from crime and back to education while building a safer city.

He said officers were also monitoring the operations to prevent the harassment of innocent people.

Police conduct such drives regularly, he said. A total of 5,867 people were detained over the past month, while those against whom no specific allegations were found were released after verification.
