Police arrested a homemaker in Nangalkot, Cumilla, in a case filed by an NGO over unpaid loan instalments. She was sent to jail through a court on Monday.

Fatema, 24, was detained from Charjania village overnight Sunday, November 1, and sent to jail at noon Monday, November 2. She is the wife of Sagar of the village. Her family expressed strong anger over the arrest.

Fatema said she borrowed Tk 150,000 from Sajeda Foundation and repaid the full amount. She said the NGO still claimed she owed an additional Tk 35,000. She alleged that NGO representatives took Tk 10,000 from her by force on Sunday evening and brought police to arrest her later that night.

Sajeda Foundation branch manager Imrul Kayes denied the allegation. He said the woman owed the NGO Tk 50,000 and that a case was filed under its rules after she failed to pay instalments for eight to nine months. He said a court arrest warrant had been issued in her name and that she had been informed earlier.

Nangalkot police station officer-in-charge Shahinur Islam confirmed the arrest. He said a team led by a female police officer acted on the court warrant and sent the woman to jail through the court.
