Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced it will deploy two military transport aircraft to Venezuela to reinforce search and rescue operations and deliver humanitarian assistance.

AFAD said that in coordination with the Turkish Armed Forces, one A-400M military transport aircraft had been prepared to carry rescue and humanitarian personnel. The aircraft will transport a 38-person search, rescue and humanitarian contingent drawn from Istanbul, Izmir and Denizli, along with a five-person National Medical Rescue Team, a two-person Turkish Red Crescent humanitarian team, two search dogs and three fully equipped rescue vehicles.

Turkey’s National Defence Ministry separately decided to send a second A-400M transport aircraft carrying a 22-person Humanitarian Aid Brigade with its equipment.

AFAD said both aircraft were scheduled to depart Istanbul Atatürk Airport at 11:15am local time on Friday.

Twin earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude struck near the Venezuelan capital Caracas and surrounding areas on Wednesday evening, causing widespread destruction. The death toll had reached at least 235, with hundreds more trapped beneath rubble and many others still missing.
