Turkish police raided a house in Istanbul and recovered more than 10,000 historical artefacts, arresting two people on suspicion of antiquities smuggling, local police announced on Thursday.
Istanbul police chief Selami Yildiz said the two individuals were detained during an anti-smuggling operation.
Private Turkish news agency DHA reported that the seized items included 3,366 ancient coins along with inscriptions and various historical objects. The artefacts reflect the social life, religious beliefs and economic activities of peoples from the Hittite, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman eras.
Turkey has for many years maintained a firm stance against the trafficking of cultural heritage. Last year the country successfully repatriated 180 artworks from abroad.
