Ansar member, bus helper killed in 2 Sylhet road accidents

SYLHET — Two people, including an Ansar member, were killed and at least 22 others injured in separate road accidents on the Sylhet-Tamabil road in Sylhet’s Jaintapur upazila on Tuesday, police said.

The accidents took place within three hours of each other starting Tuesday morning, Dec. 16.

Jaintapur police and highway police said a passenger bus and a pickup truck collided head-on around 9 a.m. on Tuesday near the Hemu Karich bridge on the Sylhet-Tamabil highway in Jaintapur upazila, killing one person identified as Md. Jihad. Jihad, 20, was a helper on an Asia Transport bus and the son of Nurul Haq Noora from Hajiganj (Part) village in Narayanganj district’s Sadar upazila. At least 20 other people on the bus were injured.

Police and witnesses said an Asia Transport passenger bus was traveling from Dhaka to Jaflong when an oncoming pickup truck lost control near the Hemu Karich bridge area and struck the bus, mangling it. The helper was killed in the crash, and at least 20 people were injured.

In a separate incident around noon, an Ansar member was killed in a head-on collision between a Hiace and a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw in front of well No. 7 in Haripur on the Sylhet-Tamabil road. Highway police said the collision took place around noon in front of well No. 7 of Sylhet Gas Fields under Jaintapur police station. The Hiace veered off the road and hit a tea shop, killing Ansar member Mostafa Mia, who was on duty at the well.
