Sylhet man strangled for iPhone, friend arrested, police say

SYLHET — Police on Wednesday recovered the body of a 22-year-old man with his hands and feet bound from a pond in Sylhet’s Beanibazar upazila, three days after he was reported missing.

The body was pulled from a pond in Shalesbar village in Sheola union of the upazila on Wednesday morning, Dec. 10.

The victim, Iman Ahmed, 22, was the son of Mutalib Mia of Khoshir Namnagar village in Kurarbazar union. Police arrested Ashraful Karim, 23, the son of Abdul Karim Monai of the same village and a close friend of the victim, on suspicion of murder.

Local sources said Ahmed had been using an iPhone to make videos, and Karim was drawn to the device. Ahmed had been missing for three days, and a search yielded no trace. A general diary was filed at the police station Tuesday night, and police began an investigation. Karim’s involvement came to light during the inquiry, and he was arrested as he tried to flee. He led police to the body during initial questioning.
