Police in Panchagarh have arrested an Indian man on a charge of spreading a young woman’s private pictures and videos on Facebook. The man, for his part, has filed a counter-case accusing the woman and members of her family of beating him, confining him and demanding a ransom. A court has ordered three people arrested in the two cases to be sent to jail.
The arrested Indian man is Md Tanveer Alam, 24, a resident of Patna district in the state of Bihar. The complainant, a woman of 20, is from Tetulia upazila in Panchagarh.
According to the first information report filed by the woman’s family, she came to know Tanveer through a video chatting app in October 2024 and a romantic relationship later developed. It alleges that at one stage, during video calls, Tanveer recorded and kept private and nude pictures and videos of her.
The report alleges that on 28 September her private pictures and videos were sent from a fake Facebook account to her relatives and acquaintances, and that Tanveer refused when asked to delete them.
At the woman’s request, Tanveer came from India to Panchagarh by way of Dhaka on Thursday. After meeting her he was taken to a relative’s house at Jalasipara in Panchagarh municipality. There, the report says, members of the family deleted the pictures and videos on his mobile phone. Police later took him from there to the police station.
In his counter-case, Tanveer alleges that the woman asked him to come to Bangladesh with a proposal of marriage. After he reached Panchagarh he was taken to her maternal uncle’s house in the Jalasi area, where, he alleges, his mobile phone, passport, debit card and other belongings were taken from him.
He alleges that after the pictures and videos were deleted from his phone he was shut in a room and stripped, that objectionable video of him was recorded and he was threatened that it would be spread, and that his mother and sister were phoned with a demand for a ransom of Tk 5 lakh.
By his account, the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh was then informed through Indian police, and he was rescued with the help of police.
Tanveer Alam has filed a case at Panchagarh Sadar police station against four people: the woman, Md Labu, 30, Md Sohag, 25, and Abdul Bari Rashed, 37.
Panchagarh Sadar police station officer-in-charge Mokhlesur Rahman said two people had been detained in the case filed by the Indian man, and Tanveer had been arrested in the case over the spreading of the woman’s private pictures and sent to court. The court ordered all three to be sent to jail.
