The fisheries department has detained three fishermen in a drive to protect fish stocks in Tazumuddin, Bhola. They were produced before a mobile court, which sentenced each to 21 days’ simple imprisonment.
The sentence was passed on Sunday morning by the mobile court’s executive magistrate, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Tarit Chandra Shil.
The three had been detained in a drive late on Saturday night.
Those sentenced are Md Soleman, 49, Md Kabir, 30, and Md Shahin, 22. All are understood to be from Hasannagar union in Borhanuddin upazila.
Fisheries office sources said a team from the office, led by Tazumuddin upazila fisheries officer Md Amir Hossain, conducted the drive in various parts of the Meghna late on Saturday night and detained the three with their nets cast in the river to catch fish. Md Amir Hossain said regular drives are being conducted on the river to conserve fish stocks and protect breeding. Such drives will continue to stop fishing in defiance of the ban, he said, and the administration will take due action under the fish protection and conservation law against anyone who breaks it during the 22 days.
