A two-year-old girl, Tanha, has died after falling into the Karatoya river in Debiganj upazila of Panchagarh.
It happened on Wednesday afternoon, 21 October, in the Dararhat Daktarpara area of Debidubha union in the upazila.
Tanha was the daughter of Md. Tarikul Islam of Dararhat Daktarpara in Debidubha union of Debiganj upazila.
According to local people, at about 1pm on Wednesday they saw the child floating in the Karatoya river beside her home. They quickly pulled her out and took her to Debiganj Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared her dead.
The child’s uncle, Nurnabi, said: “Tanha had been playing at home since Wednesday morning. I saw her at home about an hour before she went to the river. Then I heard people shouting by the river and ran there, and saw my niece, who had been pulled out of the water. With the help of relatives and neighbours she was rushed to hospital, but in the end she could not be saved.”
The child’s family and relatives are in mourning, and the sudden death of the two-year-old has cast a pall of grief over the whole area.
