Police have detained two fake Special Response Battalion (SRB) members in Sonargaon, Narayanganj.
They were detained on Monday night at a police checkpoint on the Dhaka-bound lane west of the Meghna toll plaza on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway. They are believed to have used the identity of SRB members to commit fraud and extortion.
The detained are Md Sohel, 35, of Nalchity in Jhalakathi, and Md Sajjad Hossain Sohag, 30, of Joydebpur in Gazipur.
Police said vehicles were being searched at a checkpoint near the Meghna toll plaza on Monday night, led by Sonargaon police station sub-inspector Chandan Dey. When the two men’s movements seemed suspicious, their motorcycle was stopped and searched.
Police found four black SRB vests, two walkie-talkies, a pair of handcuffs, a pistol holster and an SRB identity card, which police said bore the details of a constable named “MD Sumon Hossain”. Two Android phones, 90 plastic ties and an FZ-1 motorcycle were also seized.
Sonargaon police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Abdul Barik said the men used the seized equipment to commit fraud, extortion and other crimes while posing as SRB members, though neither of them is an SRB member. A case has been filed against them and they have been sent to court.
