Iran and Oman plan to jointly impose a toll on the Strait of Hormuz. Despite explicit US objections, the two countries want to charge fees for use of the strait, the New York Times reported on Tuesday, citing an Iranian official and four diplomats.

A 14-point plan signed between the United States and Iran earlier this month states that commercial ships will be able to transit the Strait of Hormuz safely without paying any fees. However, like the rest of the agreement, this provision is valid only for a 60-day negotiation period.

As part of the agreement, Iran and Oman are required to develop a plan. But if a toll is imposed as part of a new post-war business model for the region, it would end the centuries-old practice of free passage through this waterway.
