For cinema lovers, this weekend brings four different-genre international films together. From Friday, Dhaka’s Star Cineplex is showing four films from four genres — horror, psychological suspense, science-fiction animation and a concert film. In a press release, the multiplex authorities said “Evil Dead Burn,” “Passenger,” “Time Hoppers: The Silk Road” and the Billie Eilish concert film “Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour” were being released on Friday.
With such different genres releasing on the same day, audiences have several choices before them. For those seeking a scary experience there is “Evil Dead Burn.” For viewers who like mystery and suspense there is “Passenger.” Those wanting to watch a film with the family can pick the animated film “Time Hoppers: The Silk Road.” And for Billie Eilish’s fans there is a special concert experience.
“Evil Dead Burn”: a terrifying return
“Evil Dead Burn,” the new film in the popular “Evil Dead” franchise, is directed by Sébastien Vaniček. Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert are attached as producers. In the story, after losing her husband, a young woman goes to a remote house to seek shelter with members of her husband’s family. The atmosphere of reunion with the family does not last long. After the mysterious and cursed “Book of the Dead” is activated, the situation quickly turns horrific. One by one, family members begin to change under the influence of a terrifying force. Starring Suhaila Yaqub, Hunter Duhan and Lucian Buchanan, the film combines bloody scenes, a dark setting and supernatural terror.
“Passenger”: dread begins inside the car
“Passenger,” directed by André Øvredal, is the story of a young couple. To get away from daily busyness, they set out on a long journey in a van. But something happens on the way that changes their entire trip. After a terrible accident they help an injured man. Then, little by little, they begin to feel that they did not bring only that man from the accident scene — something else seems to have got into their car too. The terror, suspicion and struggle to survive begin around that invisible, malevolent presence. The film stars Jacob Scipio, Lou Lobell and Melissa Leo.
“Time Hoppers: The Silk Road”: four students on a mission to save history
“Time Hoppers: The Silk Road” is an animated film suitable for children as well as the whole family. The story begins in the year 2050 in the future. Four gifted students are unintentionally sent, by a time-travel machine, back to Baghdad in the year 825 AD.
There they learn that an evil chemist is planning to use time-travel technology to erase important scientific discoveries from history. The four students then become caught up in a thrilling adventure. Protecting humanity’s knowledge and history becomes their main goal.
Billie Eilish’s concert on the big screen
For Billie Eilish’s fans, the biggest attraction may be “Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour.” It is not just a concert recording in the conventional sense. James Cameron’s three-dimensional capture technology was used to make the film.
The film presents the Manchester leg of Billie Eilish’s world tour. Because of the three-dimensional technology and Dolby sound, audiences will be able to feel the concert atmosphere more closely on the big screen. The film also features popular songs such as “Birds of a Feather” and “Lunch.” Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, head of Star Cineplex’s media division, said they always try to bring new international-standard films before Bangladeshi audiences. With four films of four different genres releasing on the same day, he also expressed the hope that audiences would get the chance to pick films to their own taste.
