Three teachers at a private school in Ishwardi upazila, Pabna, were allegedly assaulted by the relatives of a student after the child was reprimanded. The incident occurred on Thursday at the Selim Reza Adarsha Bidyaniketan school in Charkuruliya area, Lakshmikunda Union.
The three injured teachers are Shamima Nasrin, 28, the school’s headteacher; Jharna Khatun Sathi, 25, a religious studies teacher; and Selina Begum, 50. Of the three, Jharna Khatun Sathi was admitted to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex.
According to the school’s account, on Thursday morning a fifth-grade student failed to recite an assigned lesson and was reprimanded by school director Selim Reza. The student went home and told the family. The child’s mother came to the school, got into an argument with staff, and left. Shortly afterwards, several of the student’s relatives came to the school and attacked the teachers.
The complaint also states that during the assault, Jharna Khatun Sathi was grabbed by her neck scarf, strangled and dragged outside the school building, causing her to become seriously unwell. Local people rescued her and arranged her admission to the upazila health complex.
School director Selim Reza said he had left the premises on urgent business shortly after the incident. He alleged that the student’s family members then came to the school and assaulted all three teachers, and confirmed the matter had been reported to police.
Ishwardi Police Station officer-in-charge Ashadur Rahman said police had been sent to the school on receiving the report and that formal legal action would be taken once a written complaint was submitted.
No statement from the accused parent or their family was immediately available.
