A gunfight broke out between members of the United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) Prasit Group and a rival armed group in the remote Painong Para area of Hafchari Union, Guimara upazila, Khagrachari, at around 7am on Friday.
When security forces reached the scene, both sides fled. Officers found Jhimit Chakma (50), described by police as a UPDF Prasit Group upazila organiser, wounded by a gunshot at the site. He was arrested and taken to Matiranga Upazila Health Complex for treatment under police custody.
According to police and local sources, the UPDF Prasit Group has long been involved in extortion, kidnapping and other criminal activities in the Painong Para area and its surroundings. Friday’s clash was linked to a dispute over territorial control, sources said.
Guimara Police Station officer-in-charge Soharwardi confirmed the arrest, describing Jhimit Chakma as an organiser of the UPDF Prasit Group. “He has been taken into police custody. There are multiple cases against him at various police stations, including extortion, kidnapping and murder, as well as outstanding arrest warrants,” he said.
The UPDF issued a separate statement describing Jhimit Chakma as the organisation’s Guimara upazila organiser. District organiser Angya Marma called for his release in the statement.
