Islam encourages a balanced approach to life — encompassing worship, work, rest, and recreation. Physical activity plays an important role in maintaining health, well-being, and productivity. Islam does not prohibit sports entirely; rather, certain activities are encouraged while others are restricted. Allah says: “Do not throw yourselves into destruction, and do good. Indeed, Allah loves those who do good” (Surah Al-Baqarah: 195).
Sports encouraged in Islam
Horse racing and riding: The Prophet (peace be upon him) organized horse racing competitions and encouraged the companions to participate (Bukhari: 2870). Riding was considered part of physical preparedness and military training.
Archery: The Prophet said: “Shoot arrows and ride horses” (Tirmidhi: 1637). In another hadith: “Strength refers to archery” (Muslim: 1917).
Running: Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that she raced the Prophet and once outran him (Abu Dawud: 2578).
Swimming: While direct prophetic instructions on swimming are limited, Islamic scholars have accepted it as an excellent form of exercise consistent with Shariah principles.
Wrestling: The Prophet defeated the famous wrestler Rukanah (Abu Dawud: 4078), affirming the permissibility of physical strength training.
Modern sports
Football, cricket, volleyball, badminton, hockey, table tennis, chess (on which scholars differ), running, and martial arts are generally permissible, provided certain conditions are met: they must not interfere with obligatory prayers; involve no gambling or wagering; maintain modesty in dress and conduct; and not become an all-consuming pursuit at the expense of religious duties.
Prohibited activities
Gambling-based games: Any sport involving wagering is prohibited. Allah says: “O you who believe, intoxicants, gambling, idols, and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid them” (Surah Al-Ma’idah: 90).
Activities that lead to neglect of prayer and worship, involve immodesty or inappropriate mixing, or carry serious risk of physical harm to oneself or others are also impermissible.
The Prophet said: “A strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than a weak believer” (Muslim: 2664). This encompasses both spiritual and physical strength. Sports achieve the status of worship when performed with the intention of maintaining health, serving the faith, and seeking Allah’s pleasure.
