A human chain and solidarity march to mark the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture were held in Magura, organised by the human rights group Odhikar.
The event was held on Friday (26 June) at 11am in front of the Magura Press Club, under the chairmanship of Masum Billah, Odhikar’s Magura district coordinator. Members of the organisation, veterans of the July uprising, human rights workers, journalists and people from various walks of life attended.
Speakers included Saidur Rahman, president of the Magura Press Club; Alamgir Hossain, joint convener of the Magura district BNP; Mohammad Hossain, former member-secretary of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement; Sabuj Hossain Shawon, a July uprising veteran; and journalists Shaheen Alam Tuhin, Khairujjaman Sabuj and Palash Mahmud.
Speakers called for effective measures to end all forms of torture, enforced disappearance, extrajudicial killing and human rights violations.
They also called on the state to play a responsible role in ensuring justice for victims of torture and in providing for their rehabilitation.
Speakers further said that everyone must work together to build an equitable, humane society founded on human rights and the rule of law.
A peaceful march was taken through the town at the conclusion of the human chain, in solidarity with victims of torture.
