Iran’s current Supreme Leader Mojtaba Ali Khamenei will not attend the funeral ceremonies for his father, the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, his representative in India said on Thursday.

The representative said the decision was taken after Israel threatened to kill the current supreme leader.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28, the first day of the US-Israeli military operation against Iran. His burial was initially planned for March, but was postponed as the conflict extended.

State funeral ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei began on Friday and will continue for seven days. Iran’s state media IRIB reported that representatives from approximately 100 countries are expected to attend the funeral prayers. He will be buried in Mashhad on July 9.

A senior Iranian military commander warned the United States and Israel against any attack during the funeral period. In a statement published by state media on Thursday, Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters commander Ali Abdollahi said: “We warn Iran’s enemies, particularly the United States and the Zionist regime, against making miscalculations. They should keep in mind that our armed forces will take severe retaliatory action against any threat or aggression against our country.”
