A parent assaulted a female headteacher after entering a school in Chuadanga. The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon at Farmpara Government Primary School in the district town.
The parent suddenly slapped headteacher Kaberi Karim repeatedly. Affected teachers have since expressed feeling unsafe going to school following the incident.
Video of the assault has circulated on social media. The district primary education officer said such conduct by a parent disrupted the school’s normal environment.
According to reports, around 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, Samsur Rahman Shuvo of nearby Farmpara entered the school and began behaving discourteously. At one point, while headteacher Kaberi Karim was seated in her office, he began slapping her repeatedly. Several people then intervened and led him outside.
According to school sources, Shuvo and his wife Mitali Khatun’s nine-year-old daughter, a third-grade student, was talking to a classmate during the school assembly. When the headteacher disciplined her for this, she slapped the child on the cheek. Angered by this, the child’s father, Shuvo, entered the school and assaulted the headteacher.
The accused parent, Shuvo, did not answer repeated phone calls regarding the matter.
Headteacher Kaberi Karim said on the matter: “As a teacher, I show affection, but sometimes discipline is also necessary. That’s why I gave her a light slap. I never imagined a parent would enter my office and lay hands on me over this. I now feel unsafe going to school. I fear I could be attacked again.”
Soaib Hossain, president of the district primary teachers’ association and headteacher of Chuadanga Kedarganj Adarsha Government Primary School, said: “We don’t expect this kind of behavior from any parent. If this happens, how are we supposed to raise our students properly? We strongly condemn this incident and stand with the affected teacher in dealing with the situation.”
District primary education officer Ohindra Kumar Mondal said: “This incident is condemnable. If the parent had a complaint, he could have informed the education office. Instead, assaulting the headteacher was wrong. We will look into the matter and take necessary action.”
