Police in Chuadanga’s Jibannagar have arrested six members of an organised gang accused of stealing electric transformers used for farmers’ irrigation. Copper coils and copper from the stolen transformers, various parts, tools used in the thefts, a private car and a pickup van were recovered.

Officer-in-charge (OC) Solaiman Sheikh announced the arrests and recovery at a news conference at Jibannagar police station at about 11am on Friday (7 August).

The arrested are Abdul Malek (45), son of the late Anwar of Sirajdikhan upazila in Munshiganj district; Shiplu (28), son of Zahid Sheikh of Farmpara in Chuadanga town; Tulu (44), son of Kashem Khan of Kahaloo upazila in Bogura; Swapan Uddin (37), son of the late Mojibar of Garabaria village in Chuadanga Sadar upazila; Sabuj Sheikh (37), son of Mizanur; and Jafar Ahmed (34), son of Abdul Gafur. After being produced in court, a seven-day police remand was sought for them.

At the news conference, the OC said that on 4 August, farmer Abu Jafar Biswas (48) of Jadabpur village in Simanta union found three empty transformer chambers lying under the electric poles of his irrigation project in the Jadabpur south field. On examination, he found that about 10kg of copper coil in each of the transformers — 30kg of copper in all — and the oil inside them had been stolen, causing him a loss of about 2.5 lakh taka. The same day, another irrigation operator, Anarul Islam, complained of copper and oil being stolen from one of his transformers. Jafar filed a case at Jibannagar police station over the incident.

After the case, police, acting on technology, intelligence and secret information, arrested the six gang members, and based on the information they gave, recovered stolen transformer copper coils, copper, other parts and tools used in the thefts from various places.

OC Solaiman Sheikh said: “The arrested had long been stealing electric transformers used for farmers’ irrigation in various parts of the district and selling the valuable copper, oil and other parts. Legal action has been taken against them, and drives to identify and arrest others linked to the gang are continuing.”
