In a special operation on the Ghumdhum border of Naikhongchhari upazila in Bandarban, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized close to 246,000 yaba pills, a foreign pistol and five rounds of ammunition. An operational team of the Ghumdhum BOP under the Cox’s Bazar Battalion (34 BGB) learned through secret intelligence that some drug traffickers were planning to smuggle a large consignment of yaba and illegal arms and ammunition into Bangladesh from Myanmar.

Based on this information, a special BGB operation was carried out in the border area around 11pm on Sunday, 9 August, led by Cox’s Bazar Battalion deputy commander Major Mehedi Hasan Ashik. At around 12:15am on Monday, 10 August, BGB members challenged several smugglers seen crossing the border near a place called Nayapara, close to border pillar 31. Sensing the BGB’s presence, the smugglers abandoned a foreign pistol, five rounds of ammunition and 246,000 pieces of Burmese yaba tablets and fled. BGB members later recovered the ownerless arms, ammunition and drugs from the spot. Legal action over the seized items is under way, BGB sources said.

Cox’s Bazar Battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel S M Khairul Alam said: “The BGB is committed not only to guarding the border but equally to preventing drugs and smuggling and recovering illegal arms. The Cox’s Bazar Battalion regularly conducts operations to protect the border and curb drugs, smuggling and various illegal activities.” He added that such effective action was strengthening the sense of security among border residents, and that such operations would continue in future.
