Kuwait has formally approved a defence cooperation agreement signed with Pakistan three years ago. With the publication of the agreement in the country’s official gazette, a new framework for military cooperation between Kuwait and Pakistan has come into force.
Kuwait Times reported that the agreement, signed between the two countries in June 2023, was published on Sunday in the official gazette Kuwait Al-Youm.
Under the agreement, cooperation between the armed forces of Kuwait and Pakistan will be expanded in areas including military training, education, intelligence sharing, logistics management, defence technology, research and the exchange of experience. The aim is to strengthen relations between the two countries’ military institutions further.
The agreement also leaves room for cooperation in the production of military equipment, electronic communications systems, scientific research, military media, and cultural and sporting activities.
A joint military committee made up of representatives of the two countries will be formed to oversee implementation of the agreement. The committee will organise joint military exercises, official visits and other cooperative programmes.
The agreement will remain in force for five years. It will then be renewed automatically unless either side decides to terminate it. The two countries have also agreed to ensure the protection of classified military information and to settle disputes arising from the agreement through diplomatic means.
The ratification follows a series of high-level meetings between Kuwaiti and Pakistani military officials in recent months, at which the two sides discussed broadening their defence cooperation.
Kuwait has been strengthening security cooperation with international partners against the backdrop of an increasingly complex security situation in the Gulf region, and the agreement has come into force as part of that effort.
Kuwait was among the Gulf states recently targeted by Iranian missile and drone attacks. Tehran has said the attacks were aimed at United States military installations in the Gulf states. Kuwaiti authorities said missiles and drones that entered their airspace were shot down.
