In Islam, Friday is called the Muslims’ day of Eid. On this day, the special mercy and blessings of Allah descend. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasised certain special acts of worship on Friday, one of the foremost of which is the recitation of Surah Kahf.
It is stated in the hadith that the best of the days on which the sun rises is Friday. In this regard, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday.” (Sahih Muslim, hadith 854)
In another hadith he said: “The most honoured of days in the sight of Allah is Friday.” (Sunan Ibn Majah, hadith 1084)
According to Islamic accounts, this special status of Friday was not ordained for earlier communities. Allah granted this special day as a gift to the community of the final prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The special merit of reciting Surah Kahf
Surah Kahf is the 18th chapter of the Holy Quran. It has a total of 110 verses. The hadith describe countless merits of reciting this surah on Friday.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever recites Surah Kahf on Friday will have a light shining for him from one Friday to the next.” (Sunan al-Kubra lil-Bayhaqi, hadith 5996; Mishkat al-Masabih, hadith 2175)
Narrated from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever recites Surah Kahf on Friday will be protected from all kinds of tribulation for eight days. And if the Dajjal appears, he will be safe from the tribulation of the Dajjal too.” (Hadith az-Zuhri, hadith 127; al-Ahadith al-Mukhtara, hadith 430)
An act that guards against the tribulation of the Dajjal
Narrated from Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever memorises the first 10 verses of Surah Kahf will be safe from the tribulation of the Dajjal.” (Sahih Muslim, hadith 809)
Glad tidings of light on the Day of Judgement
Narrated from Abu Saeed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever recites Surah Kahf as it was revealed, it will be a light for him on the Day of Judgement.” (Shu’ab al-Iman, hadith 2221)
Mercy descends with the recitation of the Quran
Bara ibn Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a man was reciting Surah Kahf at night when a cloud came and covered him, and his horse grew restless. When he told the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about it the next day, he said: “That was the sakinah (Allah’s mercy), which descended because of the recitation of the Quran.” (Sahih Bukhari, hadith 5011; Sahih Muslim, hadith 795)
What a believer should do
On Friday, a believer should give importance not only to performing the prayer but to reciting the Quran abundantly, sending blessings upon the Prophet, making supplications and remembrance of Allah, and especially reciting Surah Kahf. These acts described in the hadith carry, for a believer, glad tidings of good in this world and the next, of light, of mercy, and of safety from various tribulations.
