The National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate has fined a firm called Dhaka Kacchi Bari 25,000 taka after finding proof it used banned keora water, in a monitoring drive on biryani sellers in Chuadanga town. The drive was carried out at various biryani houses on Chuadanga Sadar Thana Road from 10:30am to 1pm on Saturday (18 July), in the public interest, after complaints spread on social media that several people had fallen ill after eating biryani.
The drive was led by Mohammad Mamunul Hasan, assistant director of the directorate’s Chuadanga district office. He said Dhaka Kacchi Bari, owned by Anichuzzaman and located in front of DJ School, was fined 25,000 taka under the Consumer Rights Protection Act after the use of banned keora water was confirmed there. “Such monitoring and drives will be carried out regularly to ensure safe food,” he said. In the same drive, Shahi Nanna Biryani House and Bismillah Biryani House were inspected, where no use of banned keora water or harmful food colour was found, though the firms were told to update their necessary documents quickly and warned not to use any banned ingredient in future. Municipal sanitary inspector Nargis Jahan, local shop-owners’ association leaders and a Sadar Thana police team assisted the drive.
