8 Jamaat-BNP activists detained while lobbying to free Krishak League leader in Kushtia

Police detained 8 Jamaat-BNP leaders and activists in Mirpur, Kushtia, while they were lobbying to free a Krishak League leader detained in a sabotage case from the police station.

The incident took place at Mirpur police station around 2am on Saturday, September 26.

The detainees are Sirajul Islam, 45, amir of Jamaat’s No. 4 ward in Chithalia union of the upazila; Jamaat supporters Maruf, 21, Bashar, 35, Mafizul Pramanik, 40, Jahangir Hossain, 40, and Badal Pramanik, 50; BNP leader Meherul Islam, 45; and BNP supporter Shahidul Islam, 53.

Mirpur police said ward Krishak League president Hafizur Rahman Hafiz was detained in a sabotage case during a raid in the Chithalia area around 12:30am on Saturday.

After he was brought to the police station, several people led by Chithalia No. 4 ward Jamaat amir Sirajul Islam came to the station around 2am. They lobbied for Hafizur’s release and kept pressuring police.

Mirpur police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Shahidul Islam said that even after being told not to, they repeatedly continued lobbying for the release of the accused in the sabotage case. At one stage, they were detained.
