Police in Mirpur, Kushtia, have recovered the body of a 70-year-old woman, Hasna Khatun, four days after she went missing, found with a sandbag tied to her waist. Her family alleges it was a premeditated murder.
Her body was recovered from the G.K. Canal in the Gobindaguniya area of the upazila around 11 a.m. Friday (Sept. 4).
The victim, Hasna Khatun, was the wife of Karim Ali of Kharara village in Bahalbari union, Mirpur upazila.
According to police, local residents and family sources, Hasna Khatun last spoke with her son, Hasan Ali, around midnight on Monday. She then went to sleep in her room. When family members could not find her early Tuesday morning, they began searching various places. Unable to find her, they filed a general diary (GD) at Mirpur police station on Thursday.
Friday morning, local residents spotted a body floating in the G.K. Canal in the Gobindaguniya area and called 999. Police recovered the body, and relatives identified it as Hasna Khatun.
Relatives allege that Hasna Khatun was deliberately murdered and her body dumped in the canal. They have demanded an investigation into the incident and punishment for those involved.
The discovery of the elderly woman’s body — missing for four days and found with a sandbag tied to her waist — has caused widespread shock in the area.
Kushtia Assistant Superintendent of Police (Mirpur Circle) Mahmudul Haque Mazumder said the body was recovered from the canal a day after the victim’s son filed the GD at the police station. The body has been sent to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for autopsy. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of death.
