Prison authorities have temporarily suspended seven guards on charges of negligence over the escape of a convicted woman inmate from Kashimpur Central Women’s Jail in Gazipur, and formed a three-member inquiry committee headed by a senior jail superintendent. Gazipur deputy commissioner Md Nurul Karim Bhuiyan confirmed the matter on Saturday afternoon. The seven suspended are three matrons — Laila Anjuman Sumi, Marina and Rehena — and four women guards, Shayla, Sharmin, Jemi and Asma Akter. Assistant inspector general of prisons (development) Md Jannat-ul-Farhad said they had been suspended on Friday after negligence was initially proven, and a three-member committee formed to find the cause.

Prison sources said that on Thursday evening about 40 women inmates were carrying bricks inside the jail, when the convict, Rimpa, 21, took advantage of the on-duty matron’s carelessness and escaped by climbing the boundary wall beside the jail office building. Her absence was noticed during a headcount, and CCTV footage confirmed the escape. Jannat-ul-Farhad said police and other law-enforcement forces were carrying out operations to arrest the fugitive, and that how an inmate escaped from a tightly secured jail was also being investigated. Rimpa is the daughter of Md Hasan Habib of Raipur village in Gangni upazila, Meherpur; she had been held at the Kashimpur Part-3 (Women’s) jail as an inmate serving a three-month sentence handed down by a mobile court at Dhaka’s Dhanmondi police station. The escape has raised fresh questions over the jail’s security and staff accountability, and prison sources said further administrative action could follow the inquiry report.
