Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Gazipur district and city units have held a human chain and submitted a memorandum demanding uninterrupted gas and power supply in the public interest, the withdrawal of unjustified bills, lower energy prices and control of runaway prices of essentials.
Leaders and activists of the district and city Jamaat, people of various professions and local residents took part in the human chain, held on Rajbari road in front of the Gazipur deputy commissioner’s office on Thursday (6 August) afternoon. Afterwards, leaders submitted a memorandum to the prime minister through the deputy commissioner.
Present at the human chain were Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Gazipur city Amir Professor Muha Jamal Uddin, city secretary ASM Faruk, Gazipur district Jamaat secretary Md Shafiuddin, the Jamaat-nominated mayoral candidate for Gazipur City Corporation Dr Hafizur Rahman, Gazipur city Jamaat assistant secretary Maulana Azharul Islam Molla, Gazipur district Jamaat assistant secretary and Sreepur upazila chairman candidate Principal Mostafizur Rahman Khan, metropolitan Sadar thana Amir Advocate Sadequzzaman Khan, secretary Md Robiul Haque, and leaders of the district and city Jamaat at various levels.
Speakers at the rally said a severe gas and power crisis had persisted for a long time in most areas of Gazipur, badly disrupting people’s normal lives. With no gas for cooking in residential areas, families were in extreme difficulty, while in the industrial belt the gas and power crisis was disrupting production and forcing many factories to shut partly or fully — leaving workers, entrepreneurs and traders facing heavy losses.
Speakers also said that after a long struggle, people had expected a welfare-oriented government. But the unchecked price rise of essentials, the gas and power crisis and the failure to take effective steps to ease public suffering were deepening frustration. They demanded effective measures immediately to ease that suffering.
The memorandum to the prime minister raised five demands: ensuring adequate gas supply to the residential and industrial sectors; ending load-shedding and providing 24-hour uninterrupted power; withdrawing and correcting unjustified and wrong gas and power bills; lowering gas and power prices; and taking effective steps to control runaway prices of essentials.
The memorandum said the gas and power crisis had thrown public life into disarray and was disrupting industrial production, and that the government’s urgent intervention was needed. It called on the government to implement the public-interest demands quickly.
After the human chain, district and city Jamaat leaders handed the memorandum to the prime minister through the deputy commissioner.
