Ukraine launched 660 drones against Russian territory in a single night, according to Russia’s defence ministry, which claimed its air defences shot down all of them. The Russian side described it as the largest single-night drone attack since the war began in 2022.

Russia’s defence ministry said on Friday that drones were intercepted over Moscow, the Russian-controlled Crimea peninsula, the Black Sea, the Azov Sea and more than a dozen other regions across the country. The announcement was published on the state platform Max.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said at least 47 drones aimed at the capital were intercepted. In a statement on Telegram, he said emergency services were working at the sites where drone debris had fallen, and reported no casualties or significant damage in the capital.

Tula region governor Dmitry Milyaev reported a large-scale drone attack on his region, which lies roughly 180 kilometres south of Moscow. He said a residential building in the Shekino district had been damaged and a woman injured.

Ukraine has significantly intensified long-range drone strikes deep into Russian territory in recent months, with oil and energy infrastructure among the primary targets in an effort to cut into revenue that funds Russia’s war effort.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has now entered its fifth year. Last week, a Ukrainian drone struck an oil refinery in the south-east of Moscow, sparking a fire.
