Plans are under way to provide separate coaches for women on every intercity train after Eid, Road Transport, Shipping and Railways Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam said.
The minister spoke Monday, May 25, at a launch event in Dhaka’s Farmgate for a 25 percent metro rail discount card for people over 65, the disabled and those with special needs.
The prime minister has directed that separate coaches for women be provided during Eid, the minister said. The prime minister called him about the matter on Sunday night, May 24. Women will be able to travel in separate coaches on two trains to Chattogram and Sylhet starting Monday, he said, and plans are under way to extend the arrangement to every intercity train after Eid.
The metro rail runs every four and a half minutes, the minister said, and intervals could be shortened further if new coaches are purchased.
Sheikh Robiul Alam said there are plans to issue cards to students as well as the elderly and disabled, offering 25 percent discounts on the metro rail and intercity trains.
More than 1.5 crore people will leave Dhaka over two days ahead of Eid al-Adha, the minister said. Passengers should buy tickets in advance or wait for transport rather than crowding terminals. There are not enough roadworthy vehicles, but unfit vehicles will gradually be taken off the roads.
An accident in Tangail on Sunday was caused by driver error, he said. The crash was unexpected, and there was no fault in road management.
