Opposition leader meets EU ambassador to discuss elections, democracy

DHAKA — Opposition leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and European Union Ambassador Michael Miller stressed the need to make democracy more meaningful in Bangladesh and to take necessary steps to ensure free, fair and credible local government elections.

They discussed the issues during a courtesy call at the opposition leader’s office at the National Parliament building on Thursday, May 14. EU Political First Secretary Sebastien Rieger Brown was also present.

The meeting covered various issues of mutual interest between Bangladesh and the European Union. Discussion focused on strengthening democracy after the national parliamentary election, ongoing reform initiatives and the implementation of referendum results.

Both sides also emphasized the need to take steps to make the upcoming local government elections free, fair and credible. Both expressed hope that existing ties between Bangladesh and the European Union, along with development cooperation and progress, would be strengthened further in the future.

Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman, foreign affairs adviser to the opposition leader, and assistant private secretary Mohammad Nazrul Islam were also present.
