The vice-president of the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RAKSU), Mostakur Rahman Zahid, told journalists: “Many of you are running news on behalf of the banned Chhatra League. You have shed a lot of crocodile tears for them. Many of these journalists are here. We will gather them and take action against this.”

He made the remarks at a press conference at the RAKSU vice-president’s office at about 7.30pm on Tuesday. The press conference was held over an attack on the RAKSU office on Monday afternoon by several students including former Chhatra League workers.

Warning journalists over their choice of words, the RAKSU vice-president, Mostakur Rahman Zahid, said: “We will take action against the words journalists use. Many of you ran news yesterday defending the Chhatra League. You are saying we carried out an attack. What kind of talk is this? They attacked, we resisted. Why do you tremble so much to say the word ‘attack’?”

Saying that journalists were more troubled than students by an incident at the university’s central library, the RAKSU vice-president said: “You are saying we brought out students who were studying in the library, and that 20 to 25 minutes of their study was lost. But no student has told us, ‘Brother, you have wasted 20 to 25 minutes of my time.’ It is the journalists who have exaggerated the matter. It seems as though they study 24 hours a day and losing those 20 to 25 minutes is the biggest thing of all.”

RAKSU also set out six demands at the press conference. It said action must be taken under the law and under university rules against those involved in a death threat made to a woman student. It further demanded the identification, arrest and trial of those who attacked the RAKSU building; an investigation into allegations of negligence by the administration; an end to terrorism and the misuse of political identity on campus; guarantees for students’ security; and swift justice against those involved in past abuses and connected with the Chhatra League.

The RAKSU general secretary, Salahuddin Ammar, and the information and research secretary, BM Nazmus Sakib, were among those present at the press conference.
