DHAKA — The Election Commission has restored the candidacy of Bangladesh Labour Party chairman Mostafizur Rahman Iran in the Jhalokati-1 (Rajapur-Kanthalia) constituency for the 13th parliamentary election after he won an appeal.

The commission declared his candidacy valid at an appeal hearing held Thursday, Jan. 15, at the Election Building in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Jhalokati district returning officer Md. Momin Uddin had rejected Iran’s nomination paper on Jan. 3 because it was unsigned. Iran appealed the decision to the Election Commission, which ruled in his favor after a hearing.

With his candidacy restored, the contest in Jhalokati-1 has intensified. The valid candidates in the constituency now include BNP’s Rafiqul Islam Jamal, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Dr. Faizul Haque, Islami Andolan’s Ibrahim Al Hadi, NCP’s Dr. Mahmuda Mitu, and Jatiya Party’s Enamul Islam Rubel and Mahibul Islam Mahim.

The list also includes JSD’s Sohrab Hossain, Janata Dal’s Jasim Uddin Talukdar, BNP independents Golam Azam Saikat and Sabbir Ahmed, Gono Odhikar Parishad’s Shahadat Hossain, and Labour Party chairman Mostafizur Rahman Iran.
