JHALOKATI — A mobile court of the Department of Environment fined five brick kilns a total of 11 lakh taka (about $9,200) and demolished two sawmills at unauthorized kilns during a daylong raid in Nalchhiti, Jhalokati, for pollution and illegal operations.
A large quantity of unbaked bricks was also destroyed, officials said. The fires in the kilns were doused with water by the fire service. The raid ran from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday.
The operation was led by Lovely Yasmin, executive magistrate of the Department of Environment’s Barishal divisional office. Divisional director Mujahidul Islam and Jhalokati district assistant director Anjuman Nesa took part.
Tilak Bricks was fined 1 lakh taka, Riaz-1 Bricks 5 lakh, MMR Bricks 3 lakh, SRB Bricks 1 lakh and Riaz-2 Bricks 1 lakh, officials said.
Mujahidul Islam said mobile court drives against illegal brick kilns and polluters would continue to protect the environment and public health.
