HABIGANJ — BNP candidate Reza Kibria and party leader Sheikh Sujat Mia, who is running as an independent, submitted their nomination papers Monday for the Habiganj-1 (Nabiganj-Bahubal) parliamentary seat. Monday was the deadline for filing nomination papers under the election schedule.
Reza Kibria is the son of former finance minister Shah A.M.S. Kibria. Sheikh Sujat Mia, a former member of parliament who lives in the United Kingdom, had also sought the party’s nomination for the seat but did not get it. He filed his nomination as an independent candidate on Monday afternoon.
After filing his nomination, Sheikh Sujat Mia said he had been working for the people of the area for 36 years. The people of the area were asking for him to stand by them, he said, and that was why he was running as an independent.
Reza Kibria declined to comment on Sheikh Sujat Mia’s candidacy.
Reza Kibria’s ancestral home is in Jalalshap village in Habiganj’s Nabiganj upazila. He contested the same seat in the 2018 parliamentary election as the Jatiya Oikya Front candidate on the BNP’s sheaf of paddy symbol. This time he will contest as the BNP’s candidate.
